As a long(ish)-distance runner, I was stoked to hear about Running From the Devil, Jamie Freveletti’s debut novel about a long-distance runner and cosmetics chemist who finds herself running from guerillas in the Columbian jungle after a plane crash, using her endurance running skills and knowledge of plant chemicals to try to evade her captors and help her fellow passengers make it to safety.
Freveletti does a solid job of bringing depth to her characters, and she moves the action along at a fast pace which had whipping through it to see what would happen next. The only problem that I had with the novel was at the end, where the real world that Freveletti establishes is undermined by a conclusion that wraps up a bit too tidily to sustain believability. Still a decent read though, Running From the Devil was a few tweaks away from being great. If this is where Jamie Freveletti is starting from, I can’t wait to see where she goes from here.
